Mayes Announces Plan to Save Taxpayers Money, Create Energy Independence

Bay City lawmaker's plan will create energy property tax exemption

LANSING – In a move to encourage more energy independence and to ease the property tax burden on Michigan residents, State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) introduced a plan in the Michigan House to create a property tax exemption for homeowners who install renewable energy devices.

"Now is the time to take action and truly reform the way we consume energy here in Michigan," said Mayes, vice-chair of the House Energy and Technology Committee. "Many property owners are looking for ways to become more energy independent, but too many factors are impeding their progress. This plan will ease the property tax burden for residents across Michigan looking to become more energy efficient and independent."

Currently, when items such as solar panels are installed on a house, they are considered an addition to the property. The additional property taxes on the energy efficient items often end up offsetting the savings on property owner's energy bills.

Under Mayes' plan, which would begin December 31, 2009, homeowners who install solar panels and other small scale energy devices, such as wind turbines, will be eligible for a property tax exemption. The plan aims to encourage more energy independence without increasing property owners' taxes.

"As I continue to work to bring good-paying jobs to Michigan and get our economy back on track, I'm also fighting to change our state's energy standards," Mayes said. "This plan is yet another step in the right direction toward reducing our energy consumption and dependence. It will also give our state the ability to attract more businesses and good-paying jobs that will in turn boost our economy and continue to move Michigan forward."
