LANSING — Yesterday, state Rep. Angela Witwer (Delta Township) introduced House Resolution 78, urging the United States Department of Justice to reverse its position supporting a federal court decision to strike down the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as unconstitutional.

“The hardworking families of Eaton County and across the state should never have to worry that the health care coverage they rely on could be stripped away, yet the ongoing attacks from Washington D.C. put their health and security at risk,” said Witwer. “Repealing the ACA without a backup plan would destroy the Healthy Michigan program and put hundreds of thousands of Michigan families at risk. That is why I will continue to fight to protect the meaningful strides we have taken as a nation to ensure our families have the care they need.”

The ACA led to the expansion of Michigan’s Medicaid program through the Healthy Michigan Plan, which was signed into law in 2013. As a result, insuring nearly 670,000 Michiganders who previously did not have health care coverage. Importantly, the number of uninsured children in the state decreased by 40,000 and the number of uninsured non-elderly adults was cut in half by 2017. The passage of the ACA also led to a decline of over 40 percent in uncompensated care for Michigan hospitals from 2013 to 2015.
