ANN ARBOR — State Representative Gretchen Driskell (D-Saline), along with the United Way of Washtenaw County, is hosting a free tax assistance event on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to noon at the United Way office, 2305 Platt Road in Ann Arbor. Trained volunteers will help residents file their state and federal income tax returns. The assistance is by appointment only; interested individuals can call (734) 971-8200 to reserve a spot.

“There were a lot of changes to Michigan’s tax policy enacted last term. Residents are going to be confused about which deductions and credits are still available to them,” Driskell said. “I encourage people who qualify for this free assistance to take advantage of it.” Transportation assistance is available for those in need.

Those eligible for tax assistance are single filers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $31,000 or less, or joint filers with an AGI of $51,000 or less. Items to bring to the appointment include:

  • Driver’s license or state ID
  • Proof of Social Security number or Taxpayer Identification Number for all filers and dependents
  • A copy of your 2011 federal and state tax returns
  • Income statement forms, such as a W-2 or 1099
