WESTLAND — State Representative Robert Kosowski (D-Westland) will give students in the Wayne-Westland school district the opportunity to become a state representative for a day. On Friday, April 19, 92 students from P.D. Graham Elementary will take part in a mock legislative forum. Kosowski will be holding an interactive fun-filled day where students will learn about the legislative process.

“I came up with this program to provide an avenue to get kids involved in how our government works,” Kosowski said.

Students will be introduced to a topic and then broken into groups to debate the issue. The first topic will be Indoor Recess vs. Outdoor Recess. Students will work together highlighting the positions of each side and then move it through the legislative process. There will also be time for students to ask any questions they may have. Upon completion, each student will receive a certificate for being a “Rep. for the Day.” The program will end with the class having a pizza party to celebrate the day’s accomplishments.

“I’m looking forward to collaborating with the students. Who knows - maybe one of them will go on to be a representative or more,” Kosowski said.

This is part of Kosowski’s “Rep on the Road” series. If your school is interested in participating in this series, contact his Lansing staff toll-free at (855) 600-2625 or RobertKosowski@house.mi.gov. He is also happy to assist schools in taking tours of the Capitol building in Lansing or providing free publications for children about state government.
