Koleszar on Gov. Whitmer’s budget recommendation

Tuesday, March 5, 2019

LANSING — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer presented her budget recommendations today for the 2019-20 fiscal year to a joint meeting of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. Among her recommendations were significant increases in revenue sharing to local communities, and increasing school funding by $507 million — the largest increase since 2002. In response to the recommendation, state Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth) issued the following statement:

“As a teacher I saw firsthand the impact chronic underfunding had on our students. The students in today’s classrooms are the workers in tomorrow’s hospitals, laboratories and construction sites, so I am glad the governor and I are both supportive of legislation that ensures our school aid fund dollars are going where they should be — to our classrooms. I am proud to support Gov. Whitmer’s efforts to finally provide the resources our schools need and put an end to shortchanging our students and our state’s future.”
